Newsrevue takes on the battle of making headlines funny in its current run at the Edinburgh Fringe.
⭐⭐⭐

What is NewsRevue?
This fast-paced, hour-long sketch show tackles everything from AI and climate concerns to political buffoons on both sides of the Atlantic. With sharp writing and energetic performances, it offers a musical, satirical spin on the world’s most sobering stories.
Leo Clasen, Lauren Thomas, Maddie Maguire, and Bryn Cash bring impressive vocal chops, comic timing, and a range of spot-on impressions to the stage, all underpinned by Fergus Carver’s live piano accompaniment. The ensemble dances and sings its way through sketch after sketch with energy and style, their chemistry palpable and pace relentless. Director Jonny Brace keeps the chaos smartly contained, with smooth transitions, clean blackouts, and choreography that’s well drilled.
While the content is strong, the venue and audience on the night I attended presented a challenge. The Ballroom at the Assembly Rooms is a large space, and a small, subdued crowd left the atmosphere a little flat. This is the kind of show that thrives in a packed, lively room, something that would have lifted both the material and the performers. Some of the more UK-centric political jokes didn’t quite land, possibly due to a mixed or international audience. Still, even without deep knowledge of British politics, I found plenty to laugh at.
Is NewsRevue Worth Seeing?
Absolutely. NewsRevue delivers exactly what it promises: an hour of witty, musical satire that pokes fun at the absurdity of modern life. If you’re in need of a laugh and enjoy your comedy served with a side of current affairs, this is a smart, well-produced bet.
