After an incredible run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Don't Tell Dad About Diana lands just as well in its home city!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Set in Dublin, 1997, Don’t Tell Dad About Diana is a high-energy coming-of-age comedy bursting with Irish humour, teenage chaos, and heartfelt moments. Told through the camp, chaotic lens of two Irish teens obsessed with Princess Diana (their patron saint of misfits) the show is both hilarious and unexpectedly moving.
I was lucky enough to see this production during its Edinburgh run, and I was eager to witness how an Irish audience would respond in comparison. As I noted in my earlier review, the performances are a delight. Hannah Power brings warmth and nuance to the “best friend” role, avoiding the clichés that could easily creep in. Conor Murray’s controlled delivery complements her perfectly, and his charm makes him instantly endearing. Together, their chemistry is magnetic, which is no surprise given they are also co-writers. Their script is sharp, well-paced, and peppered with laugh-out-loud moments, alongside a few twists that drew audible gasps from the audience.
Emma Finegan’s direction ensures the energy never falters, while Gabe Gilmour’s simple yet effective set design frames the action beautifully. A particularly clever set piece is used to striking effect, both practically and symbolically. Lighting and sound by Ferdy Emmet and Theo Foley respectively add further polish, supporting the story without ever overwhelming it.
In the intimate setting of Bewley’s Café, the show thrives with an Irish audience. With only minor adjustments since Edinburgh, Don’t Tell Dad About Diana proves itself to be witty, warm, and wonderfully performed; a heartfelt love letter to friendship, love, and the messy joy of figuring out who you are. Having seen it in both Edinburgh and Dublin, I sincerely hope it finds its way onto a larger stage in the near future.
