What is All Fired Up: An 80's Mixtape Musical?

After a particularly intense day 4 at the Edinburgh Fringe, I found myself rushing to Studio One at Assembly George Square, feeling pretty exhausted. But within minutes of the performance starting, all that stress melted away. With a powerful soundtrack and great plot, All Fired Up is a joyful trip down memory lane for many.

While more of a play with music than a traditional musical, All Fired Up follows Tammy, a woman overwhelmed by the chaos of her life; divorce, a move, unemployment, and a bratty teenager. But when she presses play on her favorite mixtape, she's transported back to her childhood and reminded of the joys that once fired her up. Cue the 80s bangers, leg warmers, and a reminder that maybe things aren't so hopeless after all.

Michael Allen and Eben Love balance the sound of the live band and vocalists, giving the audience the feel of a full rock concert. The lighting design adds to the energy with bright and bold colours.

Real-life mother-daughter duo Rachel and Scarlett Terry create a heartfelt connection onstage, drawing audible “aww”s from the audience with relatable 80's references from cassette tapes to dancing to the radio. Meanwhile, Roz Pappalardo leads the band with powerhouse vocals that drive the show forward, keeping our feet tapping.

There’s even a special shout out to the production’s community outreach program, which allows women from the general public to join them onstage for the finale.

Is All Fired Up: An 80's Mixtape Musical Worth Seeing?

Absolutely. Whether you're an 80's kid or just a fan of good vibes and great tunes, this show is a joyful reminder of how music (and a little nostalgia) can bring light back into our lives. It’s heartfelt, energetic, and a guaranteed good time.
