Glitz, Glam and a tonne of riffs, SIX continues its UK and Ireland Tour by dropping into the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre for a limited run.

SIX the Musical continues to wow audiences around the globe with its simplistic yet affective pop concert style, with book, music and lyrics by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. First premiering during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, it opened on the West End in 2019. Since then, it has had a number of successful tours, which is no surprise given its small cast, static set and huge fan base which follow it from venue to venue, known as the Queendom. I'm not sure if I qualify for this group just yet (last night was my sixth time viewing SIX), it is clear why many people will see this show again and again; great vocals, pop artist inspirations and an easy to follow plot.

The show centers around Henry VIII's wives (with a line that should be definitely changed for the Irish audience, "remember us from your GCSE's?") forming a pop group for their Divorced, Beheaded, Live tour who plan a singing competition to see who suffered the most from their husband, with the winner becoming the leader of the band. And with a running time of 75 Minutes, it is jam packed with great songs, witty dialogue and spectacular vocal performances.

LaSasha Aldredge (Catherine of Aragon), Yna Montarde (Anne Boleyn), Emily Dawson (Jane Seymour), Alexia McIntosh (Anna of Cleves), Sammy Timbers (Katherine Howard) and Layla Chivandire (Catherine Parr) all perform their songs with fierceness, each mimicking famous pop artists like Rihanna, Adele and Beyonce. A standout was Emily Dawson, who did not fall victim to oversinging her ballad "Heart of Stone", which I have witnessed with other Seymours previously. Instead, she focused on the storytelling aspect of the song, while delivering incredible vocals. Montarde was also a crowd favourite with her feisty portrayal of Anne Boleyn, with excellent comic timing.

At some points in the performance, we could feel an energy drop, which could have been down to the audience (a valliant effort from fierce Alexia McIntosh to get an audience member up to dance during her song 'Get Down' was denied and was met with a very clever comment from the performer), the heat, or the fact that it was a two show day and a Wednesday! I noted from their bios that many were having their professional debuts, and while some points of the performance felt a little unsteady (seemed to be issues with the click track in their In-Ears), it was wonderful to see so many making their start professionally is such a heart warming and female empowering production.

And even after 7 years since it was first performed, SIX the Musical continues to stand the test of time. And from the audience reaction, these Queens will be going nowhere any time soon. If you are looking for a night out with friends and family, and an easy to digest show with plenty of comedy and great music, SIX is a show not to be missed!
