The story of four struggling artists takes centre stage in the beer garden of Taylors Bar as part of the Westend Theatre and Arts Festival, where witty dialogue and great music stands out.

What is Second Draft about?
Second Draft follows four housemates, who are all starving artists, as they navigate a world filled with rejection, fractured friendships, and the pressures of working in customer service in search of their big break. While the premise may seem familiar, what elevates this production is the sharp, witty script and well-crafted music by James Boylan and Hannah Cogan.
Boylan’s writing breathes life into fully realised characters, creating genuine stakes that keep the audience engaged. Doubling as director, his collaborative work with the cast is evident. The actors’ intentions are clear, and their friendly dynamics feel authentic. While the venue’s limitations (particularly the lack of amplification, minimal space for actors, and the noise from the bar) occasionally left scenes feeling static, it’s easy to imagine the piece flourishing with a proper stage and some set design.
Cogan’s score is a standout. Her melodies are intricate, and she strikes an impressive balance: the songs feel part of the same album without ever becoming repetitive. The harmonies are beautifully written and executed with precision by the cast.
One area of potential growth lies in the structure. An interval and an expanded Act Two could give the story room to breathe. An "I Want" number, especially during the emotional low point between Michael’s and Grace’s scenes, could inject some needed momentum before the show’s resolution.
Boylan and Cogan are supported by an excellent cast. Robert Cosgrove is compelling as Tommy, the fiery and tormented writer. With a fabulous vocal tone, he commands attention (though there are moments where a touch more restraint in delivery could enhance the performance. Sometimes he is nearly too good, as silly as that sounds). Muireann Hogan is fantastic as the frantic Rose, with wonderful comedic timing and expressive reactions. Aine Keaveney brings a quiet strength to Grace, delicately portraying a woman torn between staying and leaving to follow her dreams. Her understated performance adds a layer of sincerity, especially in her monologue. Rounding out the cast is Killian Cogan, whose warmth and charm make for a deeply likeable character, with a great voice. The ensemble work is superb, with beautifully blended harmonies and strong chemistry across the board.
Is Second Draft worth seeing?
It’s exciting to see emerging Irish talent showcased in Galway. With a clever script and impressive music, Second Draft has serious potential. It’s a show to watch as it develops (an EP release or an Edinburgh Fringe production would be a natural next step). Keep an eye on this one.
