What Is Murder, She Didn’t Write?
Fresh from the West End, this delightfully camp improv murder mystery has landed at the Edinburgh Fringe...And to be honest? I wasn’t sure what to expect.
Improv can be notoriously hit or miss, often hinging on the vibe of the audience. But Murder, She Didn’t Write quickly put my doubts to rest. It’s sharply funny, wildly unpredictable, and genuinely clever.
The premise? Six talented performers, one brave audience member, and a whole lot of mayhem. The audience helps create the murder mystery, then sits back as the cast spins the chaos into comedy gold. Each night is completely different, and that's half the fun.
The cast works seamlessly together, volleying jokes and setups with lightning-fast wit (even when trying to trip each other up!) It’s clear these performers are not just skilled improvisers, but true entertainers.
The production team are equally as talented. Adam King's lighting design, which adds tension and helps the improvised story flow. Lu Herbert's costumes, whose Cluedo-inspired colour blocking is both clever and camp. Justin Williams' set design, sleek and functional. I also enjoyed the live accompanist onstage, adding a touch of theatrical flair and perfectly timed musical punctuation.
Is Murder, She Didn’t Write Worth Seeing?
Absolutely. It’s one of those rare improv shows that doesn’t just rely on gags; it builds a full, funny, and surprisingly coherent story every night. It’s endlessly rewatchable, packed with moments that will leave you in stitches, and perfect for Fringe fans looking for something light and fast-paced.
