What is Madonna on the Rocks?

When I was selecting shows to review for the Edinburgh Fringe, I aimed for variety; a mix of genres, tones, and perspectives. I’ll admit I was initially hesitant about booking Madonna on the Rocks, a one-woman play by Marie Hamilton about the challenges of motherhood, as I am a gay man who doesn’t want kids. It didn’t feel like I was the target audience.

But I’m so glad I went. This show is a gem.

What makes it work? Hamilton’s self-awareness. She leans into the absurdity of the premise, even dedicating an entire segment to how strange and potentially misguided the concept might sound. But rather than shy away, she owns it with humour. She also weaves in layered commentary about generational motherhood; reflecting on her mother, grandmother, and the expectations that get passed down through them.

Joe Price’s lighting design subtly marks these emotional shifts, allowing the show to move seamlessly between comedy and sincerity.

Ben Osborn’s music adds yet another dimension, with catchy hooks and witty lyrics that complement Hamilton’s pacing and performance. As she moves across the stage, buggy in tow, she frequently engages the audience, locking eyes, drawing us in, even appointing an audience member as her nanny. Directors Hildegard Ryan, Stephanie Kempson, and Stephen Hudson bring a sense of playful theatricality that keeps the show light on its feet.

What truly stands out is Hamilton’s ability to pivot from absurdist tantrums to raw, emotional beats. She delivers both with heart and honesty. And notably, she uses her platform to highlight real-world support for struggling mothers, mentioning The Mum Club in Edinburgh, which you can access here: themumclub.com.

Is Madonna on the Rocks worth seeing?

Even if you don't fit the presumed demographic (like me), Marie Hamilton’s Madonna on the Rocks is a refreshing, clever, and deeply human piece of theatre. It’s a show that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still managing to say something real and resonant. Through sharp writing, dynamic performance, and playful direction, Hamilton invites us into a story that’s both personal and universal.

Whether you’re a parent, never want to be one, or fall somewhere in between, this show offers something for everyone: laughs, reflection, and a surprising amount of heart. Don’t miss it.
