Don't Tell Dad About Diana is filled with great laughs and a huge amount of heart that makes it a show not to be missed at this year's Edinburgh Fringe.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Set in Dublin, 1997, Don’t Tell Dad About Diana is a high-energy coming-of-age comedy bursting with Irish humour, teenage chaos, and heartfelt moments. Seen through the camp, chaotic lens of two Irish teens obsessed with Princess Diana (their patron saint of misfits), the show is both hilarious and unexpectedly moving.
The performances are a delight. Hannah Power brings warmth and nuance to the “best friend” role, steering clear of cliché which could easily happen in this play. While Conor Murray’s controlled delivery balance her perfectly, while being extremely endearing. Together, they have a great chemistry that keeps the audience hooked. It is no surprise that these two work so well, as they are also co-writers. The script is sharp and well-paced, studded with laugh-out-loud moments and a couple of twists that drew audible gasps from the audience.
Emma Finegan’s clever direction ensures the pace never drops, while Gabe Gilmour’s simple yet effective set design supports the story without distracting from it, with one particularly clever set piece is used to brilliant effect, both practically and symbolically. They are complimented by great lighting and sound designs from Ferdy Emmet and Theo Foley respectfully.
Even with its rich Irish humour and very specific cultural setting, the show translates effortlessly to an Edinburgh Fringe audience. This is proof that good storytelling, sharp writing, and genuine heart can work anywhere.
Don't Tell Dad About Diana is a witty, warm, and wonderfully performed love letter to friendship, love, and the messy joy of figuring out who you are. I look forward to seeing where this show goes next.
